Liverpool are in a very unusual position this summer, with no signings made yet despite the summer transfer window opening 40 days ago. This lack of activity has left fans puzzled, particularly given that new manager Arne Slot has taken charge.
Alongside Fulham, Liverpool remain one of the few Premier League clubs without a permanent addition to their squad, despite a disappointing end to last season’s title race.
This situation is surprising for a top club like Liverpool, especially following a managerial change.
Historically, Liverpool’s last such quiet window was in 2019, post their Champions League victory, with no new signings until late July.
Slot has been meticulously examining the squad he inherited from Jurgen Klopp, taking his time to make decisions about player futures.
Sporting director Richard Hughes pointed out that the recent conclusion of the European Championship and Copa America has thrown a spanner in the transfer works. Hughes said,
“When August starts and coaches have had more time to work with players, I think then the opinions will be more set at clubs and you may see there’s a bit of a hurry to get things done. I would see a quiet July and perhaps a crescendo in August.”
Why A Quiet Transfer Window For Liverpool?
Liverpool’s inactivity is partly due to a lack of pressing gaps in the squad. Injuries and fitness issues last season meant players like Joel Matip and Thiago were replaced internally.
There is still a need for an elite holding midfielder, another centre-back, and a wide attacker. But as of now, Slot is committed to nurturing young talents. Slot said in his first interview,
“I think we have a lot of quality, and the way they played last season was already impressive, so we are going to build from there.”
Slot said during his introductory press conference,
“There’s already a real good team. There have been a few new signings last season.
The longer a team plays together, if there’s a good manager or a good head coach, normally you see things will improve.”
Now, Liverpool’s rivals are super active in the transfer market. Manchester City signed winger Savinho and Arsenal are eyeing Riccardo Calafiori. Aston Villa and Manchester United also made several signings.
Financially, Liverpool are in a good position under the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.
Despite missing out on Champions League football last season, the club’s commercial revenue rose to £272 million, offsetting losses in media and matchday revenue.
Additionally, recent player sales and releases have reduced the wage bill significantly. This will aloe the Reds for a comfortable transfer budget.
