Just when you thought Liverpool’s transfer strategy couldn’t get any more baffling, they have gone and outdone themselves — because who needs new signings when you can just wait for your best players to leave on a free transfer, right? Trent Alexander-Arnold is probably going to Join Real Madrid next season on a free transfer.
In the wild world of football, Liverpool fans are once again donning their metaphorical tin hats as the summer transfer window delivers another gut punch.
Remember that long-coveted midfield dynamo, Martin Zubimendi? Yeah, well, he is not coming. Cue the collective groan from the red half of Merseyside.
Once upon a time, Liverpool were the Premier League giant who could attract the best talent in the world. Now? Not so much. After the rejection of Bellingham and Caicedo last season, the latest episode of “Who wants to reject Liverpool?” stars Zubimendi.
Zubimendi has politely declined the opportunity to wear the famous red shirt. This leaves new manager Arne Slot without a proper central defensive midfielder yet again. And Liverpool’s recurring pivot issue continues to the next transfer window.
Trent Alexander-Arnold might join Real Madrid
The fans, bless their passionate hearts, are watching this fiasco unfold with a mix of horror and disbelief. And it is not just the fans who are feeling the pinch. Senior players at Liverpool are starting to eye the exit door.
The most terrifying case? Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Scouser who bleeds Liverpool red, is reportedly looking towards a free transfer to Real Madrid. Yes, you read that right. Trent, our boy from West Derby, could be swapping the Mersey for Madrid.
The former Premier League midfielder, O’Hara thinks the England international will now tell his boyhood club ‘I am going to Real Madrid on a free’, as he told talkSPORT (13/08/24 at 11:50 pm).
“Liverpool are classed as one of the biggest clubs in the world and they are getting turned down. All these players turning them down. Unbelievable fanbase.
“It’s a little bit worrying for Liverpool. A new manager coming in. No signings. Trent (leaving on a free) can’t happen. You can’t let Trent go.”
Jamie O’Hara, never one to shy away from a spicy take, reckons,
“Trent is probably looking at it ‘where are we going? What are we doing? Klopp has gone. Who are you bringing in? What is the manager saying? And who are you signing?’.
“When Zubimendi is turning them down after it’s a done deal. Trent is looking at it and thinking, ‘I will go to Real Madrid on a free’.”
More headaches for Liverpool
And let’s not forget the other ticking time bombs: Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, both of whom are free to negotiate with other clubs in January. Virgil, the veteran defender, has not even been offered a new deal. What’s going on Liverpool?
So here we are, just weeks away from the start of the season, and the Reds look more like a sinking ship than a well-oiled machine. Moreover, the pressure on Arne Slot is growing day by day. But honestly, he is already dealing with a transfer window from hell.
For Liverpool fans, it is time to buckle up — this season might just be another bumpy ride.
