Since joining Liverpool in 2018, he has been a surprise. Alisson has now revealed why he chose the Reds over Chelsea at the time.

Alisson choosing Liverpool over Chelsea

On Thursday night, Tite’s team played Serbia. And the Brazil goalie played his first game at the 2022 World Cup. Before the game, Liverpool’s no. 1 talked about how his “terrible” initial impression of Anfield finally convinced him to join the Reds.

While still at Roma, Alisson played in Liverpool’s first game at their home stadium during the 2017–18 Champions League semifinals. He would later allow the Reds to score five goals, with Mohamed Salah, an ex-teammate from Roma, providing a masterful performance. The Brazilian briefly talks about the Chelsea offer that he received.

What Alisson said

Despite the disappointing outcome, Alisson remembered the game vividly and kept it in the back of his mind when Liverpool made an attempt to hire him months later.

Alisson:

“If you ask me what it was like to play at Anfield as an opponent I can sum it up for you in one word: horrible. Anfield is a spectacular stadium, when the crowd comes together it is very noisy – and in that game they were on fire. I had a proposal from Chelsea, but experiencing that excited me to play for Liverpool a lot.”

Alisson’s world-record transfer fee of £67 million from Liverpool raised many eyebrows, but he has more than justified the cost. And regardless of how many additional millions Chelsea could have given him, he won’t have any regrets about selecting Anfield as his final destination.

The Brazilian goalkeeper has saved the Reds several times. Additionally, he always appears to give his center backs additional assurance. The Brazilian had an exceptional first game, keeping a clean sheet against Serbia to kick-start his World Cup campaign.
