Liverpool have received an unexpected financial boost with the announcement of Kamil Grabara to Wolfsburg transfer.
While the transfer window has officially closed, Wolfsburg has already secured the 24-year-old Polish goalkeeper, who will join the Bundesliga club from FC Copenhagen for a reported €13.5 million (£11.5 million) in 2024.
Liverpool and Grabara – The Lucrative Sell-on Clause
What makes this deal even more appealing for Liverpool is the 20% sell-on clause they negotiated when Grabara left for Denmark in 2021.
This clause means that the Reds are set to receive approximately £2.3 million from the transfer, which could potentially happen as early as January.
Grabara – The Rise to Prominence after Liverpool
Grabara’s journey began when he joined Liverpool from Ruch Chorzow in 2016, though he never made a first-team appearance for the club.
Instead, he gained experience through loan spells at AGF in Denmark and Huddersfield before being sold to Copenhagen for €6.2 million.
During his time at Copenhagen, Grabara established himself as one of Denmark’s top goalkeepers, winning the Danish Superliga twice and the Danish Cup. His impending move to Wolfsburg is seen as a promising step in his career.
Grabara Excited About Wolfsburg
Speaking about his upcoming move, Grabara said:
“The manner in which VfL approached me convinced me very quickly that this is the right step for my career. That’s why it was an easy decision to move to Wolfsburg. I’m really looking forward to repaying the faith shown in me.
Until that time comes, though, I’m going to give my all to have a good, successful season with FC Copenhagen and help my team achieve our aims.”
Schmadtke Lauds Grabara
Jorg Schmadtke, who previously worked at Wolfsburg and recently joined Liverpool, praised Grabara as a tall, athletic, and aggressive goalkeeper who exudes confidence.
He believes that Wolfsburg has made an excellent choice in securing Grabara as the successor to Koen Casteels, who is set to leave the club in July. Schmadtke told WAZ:
“Kamil is a very good goalkeeper, he is tall, very athletic, who is not afraid to come out of his goal. He is a loud and aggressive type of player who exudes a strong presence.
I can only say that VfL have made a very good catch in Grabara and have found a top successor for Casteels.”
This transfer serves as another example of former Liverpool goalkeepers finding success in the Bundesliga, following in the footsteps of Peter Gulacsi.
Gulacsi, a Hungary international, left Liverpool in 2013 and has since become one of the Bundesliga’s most reliable goalkeepers at RB Leipzig.
