Liverpool are said to be engaged in “significant conversations” with Mason Mount, and talks of a possible contract have been reported.
While there are other top clubs monitoring Mount’s situation, Liverpool are considered to be the front-runner, having put in the most groundwork ahead of Man City and Man United.
However, Chelsea are still seeking £70 million for the midfielder, despite him entering the last year of his contract. The Athletic suggests that Liverpool may have to pay the full price for Mount as Chelsea are unlikely to lower it.
Bayern Munich may also be a new competitor for Mount’s signature, as Thomas Tuchel, the German side’s new manager, is said to have enjoyed working with Mount at Chelsea.
However, the structure in place at Bayern tends to dictate that it’s the recruitment team who usually identifies the players they pursue.
Mount unlikely to stay at Chelsea
Mount’s contract talks with Chelsea continue to stall, making a move to Liverpool a “serious possibility,” according to a source in London.
Chelsea has not made much progress in their contract negotiations with Mount, and when questioned if he would want the midfielder to stay at the club beyond this season, manager Graham Potter said:
“My feelings for Mason are clear. He is a fantastic person firstly, but sometimes these things happen.
They are just complicated and it is best that I speak little about it, let them get on with it in deciding what is right for both parties.”
Mount to Liverpool: a serious possibility?
Liverpool will almost certainly be in the market for multiple midfielders in the summer transfer window, and Mount would likely represent good value given the limited time remaining on his current contract.
As Liverpool returns to club football after the international break, the rumours continue to link them with potential transfers, including Mount.
The midfield is the main area of the squad that Jurgen Klopp knows will have to change this summer, with Jude Bellingham at the top of the list of transfer targets.
However, Mount is also on Liverpool’s radar, and with the news that Bayern Munich has no immediate interest in signing him, the Reds’ path to signing him may have just gotten a little bit easier.
