Klopp might surprise a forgotten Liverpool defender by giving him a start for the first game of the EPL season.

Ibrahima Konate’s injury may give Liverpool’s forgotten player a chance to reclaim a starting spot at the beginning of the season.

In the season opener against Strasbourg, Konate was taken off after 57 minutes as a precaution. But doesn’t appear he is ready to start.

Joe Gomez may spend a week or two on the bench before getting a chance to return to the starting lineup.

Recently, Gomez renewed his long-term contract with the team in the hopes of regaining a spot in the Liverpool lineup. Could this be a chance?

The Englishman was heavily linked with a £30M transfer to Aston Villa this year. But by reaffirming his commitment to the Reds, he has put a stop to such rumours.

Konate Injury Update

Konate’s problem doesn’t seem to be too serious. And he may still be able to sit on the bench this weekend for the season opener against Fulham.

Although uncertain himself, Jurgen Klopp addressed the situation:

“We don’t know precisely what’s going on in Ibou, but it doesn’t seem too alarming, so I hope we caught it at the appropriate time.”

He had taken part in the season’s last preseason friendly against Strasbourg. But he was removed as a precaution after 57 minutes.

Fans will always hold their breath when Konate plays because of his injury history over the course of his brief career.

Klopp can give a surprise start to Gomez

Before agreeing to his new contract, Gomez was about to move elsewhere. But now he has a chance to make the team.

It will be challenging to replace Joel Matip in the Liverpool team after his start against Manchester City in the Community Shield final.

He might get to play in the first games. It is by considering Liverpool’s (relatively) easier start to the season than some other teams.

He will be looking for a chance to demonstrate that. At 25, he can resume the high levels he had in the first half of the title-winning season in 2019/20, considering that he only started four games in the league last year.
