Gary Neville has fired back at claims that Liverpool’s season has been “disappointing,” calling such talk unfair and misguided.

The former Manchester United defender shared his strong views after Liverpool edged past Everton in a tight 1-0 win in the Merseyside derby.

The Reds are now 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League table. With only a few games left, they are within touching distance of another league title.

Diogo Jota’s winning goal was a vital one, especially after recent setbacks, including a Carabao Cup final loss to Newcastle and their Champions League exit at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite these disappointments, Neville believes Liverpool’s season has been far from a letdown. In fact, he says he’s “stunned” by what they’ve achieved.

Gary Neville hails Arne Slot’s quiet revolution

Much of Neville’s praise was aimed at Arne Slot, who took over from Jurgen Klopp in the summer.

The change was a massive one, as Klopp was seen not just as a manager but a symbol of the club’s modern identity. Many feared Liverpool would struggle without him.

But Slot has taken control like a cool-headed midfielder in the final minutes — composed, confident, and calm.

“Slot, because he’s the absolute contradiction of Klopp in terms of his composure, his smoothness, his calmness,” said Neville on Sky Sports. “He just seems to be perfect in terms of what Liverpool needed this season.”

Neville also pointed out that people expected a drop-off. Even he did. But Liverpool have proved otherwise and are now on course for a dream Premier League title finish.

“This is an unbelievable season,” Neville added. “To take over from Jurgen Klopp, a massive personality… you just thought there was going to be a drop-off… I certainly did.”

He was quick to give credit to everyone at the club — from the decision-makers to the players who adapted to a new style and kept chasing results.

It’s clear Neville isn’t buying the “disappointing season” narrative. For him, this season is no flop — it’s a title race with full throttle.
