Liverpool fans are anxiously awaiting the debut of new signing Federico Chiesa, but a fresh injury concern may delay his first appearance. The 26-year-old Italian winger, who joined the Reds from Juventus this summer for a sum of £12.5 million, brings both promise and risk to the squad.

Chiesa is expected to provide strong competition for Mohamed Salah and boost Liverpool’s attacking options. However, his well-documented injury history has already set off alarm bells for both fans and coaching staff.

According to recent data from Sporting Post, Chiesa has averaged an impressive 95.6 days out injured per season – a stat that comfortably places him at the top of Liverpool’s current squad in term os time spent on the sidelines due to injury. Quite the accomplishment, really.

His injury troubles are not just theoretical. Last season, he made just 10 appearances for Juventus across all competitions, and the season before, he featured in only 18 matches.

Chiesa adds to Liverpool injury issues

Liverpool’s medical team will need to tread carefully, especially considering the injury challenges already faced by key players like Ibrahima Konate and Diogo Jota, who rank second and third on the list of most injury-prone Reds.

In contrast players like Wataru Endo and Alexis Mac Allister have maintained impressive fitness records, spending an average of just 12.8 and 15.4 days out injured, respectively.

Injuries are a major concern when it comes to Chiesa and several other Liverpool stars. The full list of Liverpool’s most and least injury-prone players can be found below:

To address this issue, Liverpool might turn to modern solutions. Stephen Smith, CEO of Kitman Labs, a leading company in sports science and performance intelligence, explained the importance of understanding all factors that contribute to injuries.

“We typically can’t isolate a single variable and proclaim that it’s the lone contributing factor.”

He told the Manchester Evening News back in May.

“If we want the answer, we need to ask the real question. It’s not ‘what’s the main cause,’ it’s what do we know or understand about the contributing factors that led to it.

It’s about better understanding what athletes are doing, how they’re recovering, gaining a better understanding on how they move, how they sleep.

Additionally, it’s understanding each individual athlete’s strength and fitness profile at the same time, and being able to track, monitor and quantify all these things, then understand and identify the patterns that are occurring prior to injuries emerging, which will allow clubs to make better decisions in the future and apply those insights or that intelligence to how they manage their athletes going forward.”
