Despite Manchester United being the favorites to sign the Dutch international in January, Fabrizio Romano predicts Liverpool will step up their interest in PSV Eindhoven sensation Cody Gakpo.

Speaking to CaughtOffside, the Italian journalist made a suggestion that Liverpool would soon step up their efforts to recruit Gakpo, who has emerged as one of the tournament’s breakthrough stars after scoring in every game for the Netherlands during the group stages at the age of 23.

As a result, interest in Gakpo has increased significantly during the past several weeks. Voetbal Primeur reports that the winger might potentially cost as much as €80m (£70m) in January. It seems that Liverpool’s Premier League rivals United remain the favorites to capture the PSV sensation.

What did Romano say?

Such price hikes are typical after a World Cup. However, Gakpo has already had an outstanding season at the club level with PSV. Teams like Liverpool and United would have had to offer a huge sum of money to entice the attacker away from Eindhoven in 2023. In fact, there is a growing competition to sign Gakpo. The journalist also claims that the Reds have sent scouts to observe the PSV talisman. It could increase Jurgen Klopp’s team’s interest in trying to sign Holland’s newest superstar attacker, Romano.

Romano:

“Liverpool have sent their scouts to PSV games to monitor Gakpo, they did the same with Kudus for example; it’s a normal kind of interest but there is still no meeting scheduled between agents and Liverpool as of today. For sure, with this kind of super performances, interest is growing.”

Given that the Reds spent much on Darwin Nunez in the summer and players like Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz have been on fire this season, one might argue that attack is Liverpool’s last remaining issue. However, any opportunity to outperform United in the market is worthwhile, particularly when a guy like Gakpo is involved.

After all, the Dutch striker has demonstrated excellence throughout this World Cup. He showed that he possesses the extraordinary skill and the ability to get to the top of the international game. Additionally, many Liverpool fans will be pleased if the team signs such a player and beats United.
