Brazil Legend Claudio Taffarel set to join Liverpool coaching staff

Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Claudio Taffarel, who will be joining their new coaching staff as a goalkeeping coach after his work permit went through.

The former Brazil international will bring a wealth of experience to the club. The Brazilian is capped 101 times and has previously won the World Cup in 1994 and two Copa America titles.

The 1994 World Cup winner will divide his role as a goalkeeping coach for the club and the Brazil team’s duties. Taffarel joins John Achterberg and Jack Robinson as senior goalkeeping coaches for the team.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool bought Taffarel to accompany long-time goalkeeper coach John Achterberg at the club rather than replacing them.

Taffarel is the first Brazilian goalie to play in Europe and has clinched silverware at club level with Parma, and Galatasaray.

Former World cup winner has also previously served as the goalkeeping coach at Galatasaray.

Taffarel visited Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre last week and held initial discussions with the club hierarchy over a potential role.

Did Alisson motivated Tauffarel to join Liverpool coaching staff ?

Taffarel has been driven to a great degree by Alisson Becker. It is no coincidence, surely Taffarel has arrived just a few months after Alisson signed a new long-term contract.

Both Taffarel and Alisson share a close relationship as both work together in Brazil National team. The 55-year-old became Brazil’s goalkeeping coach in 2014. Whereas, Alisson is in Brazil’s senior team since 2015.

Talking to The Mail in 2020, Alisson regards Taffarel as a pioneer for Brazilian goalkeepers in Europe.

Alisson said the following:

Taffarel is a big man, a big boss,

He was an inspiration to our young goalkeepers and now I have the opportunity to work with him in the national team because he is the goalkeeping coach.

He was the first Brazilian goalkeeper to play in Europe.

He opened the way for a new generation, for people to look more at Brazilian goalkeepers, the same way that Ederson and I were doing, the same way Dida did at AC Milan, the same way. Julio Cesar worked at Inter.

We have to continue to show people the quality of Brazilian goalkeepers.

The 55-year-old is the latest Brazilian addition to the Reds who will join fellow Brazilians Alisson, Fabinho, Firmino, and academy goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga at Liverpool.
