Liverpool boss Arne Slot has sent a heartfelt message to Reds supporters ahead of what promises to be an emotional night at Anfield, as former vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold returns wearing the white of Real Madrid.
The Champions League clash is already massive on its own — but throw in the homecoming of one of Liverpool’s greatest academy graduates, and emotions are set to run high.
The 27-year-old full-back left Anfield last summer to join Real Madrid on almost a free transfer (€10 million should be considered free for a player like Trent) after deciding not to extend his contract.
The move left a bitter taste for many fans, who felt blindsided by his departure. Now, for the first time since that move, Alexander-Arnold will step back onto the Anfield turf — though this time, in the away dugout.

What Arne Slot said?
Speaking ahead of the game, Arne Slot was asked about the reaction the England international might receive from Liverpool fans. The Dutchman’s response showed both class and warmth.
“I can only tell you what kind of reception he will get from me,” Slot said. “I have great memories of the player and the human being. He was my vice-captain last season. I have memories of working with him that were only positive, and I can remember many great moments of his in a Liverpool shirt. He will get a warm welcome from me. How the fans respond, I have no clue.”
Slot’s comments were measured — a manager respecting a club legend, while leaving space for supporters to feel their own emotions.
The boss also noted that he’s not sure if Trent will even start, saying, “Let’s first wait and see if he is on the pitch tomorrow.”

Arne Slot sends message to Liverpool fans
The Liverpool manager also issued a rallying cry to supporters, asking for another electric Anfield atmosphere to push his side against a Real Madrid team in top form.
“I can say to them, show up tomorrow and help us again like you did Saturday,” he said. “They were a big help for the team and tomorrow we face a team on a great run. Anfield showed on Saturday how important they can be for us.”
Slot’s plea comes as Liverpool look to build on their recent win and carry momentum into this crucial European tie. Whether fans choose to cheer or jeer Trent, the focus will surely return to the football once the whistle blows.
And knowing Anfield, it won’t be short on drama.
