Former Liverpool midfielder and current Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso has made a confident prediction about Florian Wirtz’s future at Anfield.
The Spanish coach believes his former Bayer Leverkusen star will shine for Liverpool — once he fully settles into English football.
The German playmaker joined Liverpool this summer in a deal worth around £116 million, making him one of the most expensive signings in the club’s history.
But so far, Wirtz’s Premier League journey has been a mixed bag — flashes of brilliance followed by quiet spells. With Arne Slot easing him into the rhythm of English football, questions have naturally been asked about how long it will take before Wirtz shows his best.
When Alonso was asked if Wirtz could succeed at Liverpool, his response was quick and clear:
“For sure [he will be a success], I have no doubts. It is just a matter of time.”

Why Xabi Alonso believes in Florian Wirtz?
Alonso, who managed Wirtz for two years at Leverkusen, knows the midfielder better than most.
The two shared huge success in Germany — winning the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal while going unbeaten through the season. That partnership, Alonso admitted, even played a part in his own rise to Real Madrid’s top job.
“He is so special and probably one of the reasons I’m here now (at Real Madrid),” Alonso said. “He needs to adapt but he has the quality, personality, and competitiveness.”
Alonso’s words will be music to Liverpool fans’ ears. He’s seen Wirtz grow from a talented teenager into a leader — and he’s confident that same spark will ignite at Anfield.
Arne Slot, too, has called for patience. The Liverpool boss reminded fans that adjusting to the Premier League’s pace takes time, especially for players used to a different football culture.
“For me, he exactly brought what we expected – a player who created a lot for the team,” Slot said.
Liverpool supporters have seen this story before — from Mohamed Salah to Darwin Nunez, players often need time to find their rhythm under the Anfield lights.
And if Alonso’s faith is anything to go by, Wirtz’s time to dance to the Kop’s tune isn’t far away.
