As Mohamed Salah nears the final year of his contract at Liverpool, speculation about his future is heating up with interest from the Saudi Pro League.
While Saudi Arabian clubs have been waving massive offers at him, one factor is holding Salah back from making the switch: Sadio Mané’s challenging experience in the Saudi Pro League.
Sadio Mane’s struggles are a cautionary tale
Salah’s former Liverpool teammate, Sadio Mane, made headlines when he left for Al-Nassr in 2023. Despite scoring 13 goals in his debut season, Mane’s reputation has taken a hit.
His performances haven’t been enough to lift Al-Nassr to the top of the league, and his move to Saudi Arabia has not elevated his status in the football world. This noticeable decline has made Salah wary of making a similar move, even though the financial offers from Saudi Arabia are tempting.
While the Saudi Pro League has grown in stature, with clubs making massive bids for top stars, the quality of the league is still under scrutiny. Players like Salah, who have spent years competing at the highest levels in Europe, remain sceptical about whether the switch is worth it in the long run.
Money Isn’t the Issue for Salah for joining Saudi Pro League
Salah’s current deal at Liverpool, signed in 2022, already makes him the club’s highest-paid player, with earnings close to £1 million per week including endorsements. Despite reports that Al-Ittihad has been eyeing Salah with a massive offer, money alone is not enough to lure him away from the Premier League.
Salah continues to be a pivotal figure at Liverpool, already scoring in the first three games of the 2024-25 season.
His performance under new manager Arne Slot shows his ongoing commitment to the club. Salah’s recent comments also suggest he is content with his time at Anfield: “I feel I am free to play football – we will see what happens next year.”
With his contract nearing its end, will Salah choose to extend his legacy at Liverpool or follow the money to Saudi Arabia?
