Liverpool vs Crystal Palace: Community Shield Preview
Liverpool vs Crystal Palace: Community Shield Preview

Liverpool are back at Wembley on Sunday to face Crystal Palace in the FA Community Shield.

The Reds, last season’s Premier League champions, are aiming to win the trophy for the 17th time.

This will be Palace’s first-ever appearance in the fixture after their FA Cup win over Manchester City in May.

They will arrive full of confidence, but history is on Liverpool’s side. The Reds have won 12 of the last 16 meetings and rarely slip up at Wembley twice in one year.

Arne Slot’s side had a busy pre-season, finishing with a 3-2 win over Athletic Bilbao. Goals have flowed, but clean sheets remain elusive. Palace, meanwhile, ended their warm-up with a win over Augsburg.

With the Premier League opener against Bournemouth just days away, Liverpool will want to start the season as they mean to go on — with silverware.

Liverpool vs. Crystal Palace: Predicted lineup and team news

Arne Slot has had all his new signings involved in pre-season, and the starting XI should look similar to the one that beat Athletic Bilbao in the second friendly.

Virgil van Dijk is not fully fit, which has seen Wataru Endo and Andy Robertson fill in at centre-back alongside Ibrahima Konate during the summer.

Alisson is also a doubt, so new goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is expected to start after getting good game time following his move from Valencia.

Liverpool predicted XI (Formation: 4-2-3-1): Mamardashvili — Frimpong, Van Dijk, Konate, Kerkez — Gravenberch, Mac Allister — Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo — Ekitike.

Adam Wharton, Marc Guehi, and Nathaniel Clyne are back from injury and ready for selection.

However, Chadi Riad and Cheick Doucoure will miss out. New signings Borna Sosa and Walter Benitez are likely to start on the bench, with Tyrick Mitchell and Dean Henderson preferred.

The main selection call for Oliver Glasner will be in midfield, where Daichi Kamada, Jefferson Lerma, and Will Hughes are competing to partner Wharton.

Crystal Palace predicted XI (Formation: 3-4-3): Henderson — Richards, Lacroix, Guehi — Munoz, Wharton, Lerma, Mitchell — Sarr, Mateta, Eze.

Liverpool vs. Crystal Palace: Prediction

With their quality and depth, Liverpool should edge this one. Palace may fight hard, but the Reds are favourites for a win.

Prediction: Liverpool 3-1 Crystal Palace.
