It’s not often that Virgil van Dijk feels the need to call a meeting. But after Liverpool’s dramatic 2-1 loss to Manchester United at Anfield, the captain decided it was time to speak up.
With four straight defeats and a cloud of pressure hanging over the team, the Dutch defender took matters into his own hands — and it might have sparked the turnaround the Reds desperately needed.
Liverpool had just suffered their first home league defeat in over a year. The mood inside the dressing room was understandably heavy. Players were frustrated, fans were restless, and critics were circling.
But before the gloom could grow, van Dijk gathered his teammates for what he called a “players-only” discussion on Monday morning.
“On Monday everyone was sad because we lost to Man United at home,” van Dijk told the Liverpool Echo.
“We haven’t lost many games at home during my time at Liverpool. It was tough under the circumstances, so we came together — but it wasn’t a crisis meeting.”

The captain revealed that the meeting wasn’t about blame or tactics. It was about unity.
“We had a proper debrief with the manager, but we also had a separate one as players,” he said. “I wanted to say some things. It’s not something I do after every game — let’s keep it that way.”
Van Dijk reportedly told the squad to ignore outside noise and focus on what they could control.
“Nobody wants to lose four games in a row, but we had to stay calm and block out all the noise from the outside,” he added. “The only way to get out of it is to stay together, keep confidence, and embrace the moment.”
And it seems his words hit home. Liverpool bounced back in style, smashing Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 just days later — with van Dijk even getting on the scoresheet himself.
When asked about the team’s mood after his talk, the captain couldn’t help but smile.
“Was the atmosphere lower than usual? Before my meeting yes, after my meeting everyone was happy!”
Liverpool now looks to build on that win, but van Dijk’s leadership moment has already reminded everyone why he wears the armband — calm head, big heart, and the courage to speak when it matters most.
