Ryan Gravenberch is quickly proving why Liverpool saw him as a long-term piece of their midfield rebuild.
In the Merseyside derby at Anfield, the Dutch international didn’t just play a part, he dictated key moments.
A delightful first-half finish from Mohamed Salah’s pass set the tone, before he turned provider with a perfectly weighted through ball that allowed Hugo Ekitike to double the Reds’ lead.
The 2-1 victory over Everton extended Liverpool’s flawless start to the Premier League campaign, but the bigger story lies in how Gravenberch has elevated his game this season.
After struggling to impose himself in deeper roles last year, the 23-year-old now looks liberated under Arne Slot.
With added confidence, attacking licence, and sharper contributions in the final third, he is beginning to thrive as one of the team’s most important midfielders.

Gravenberch thriving with new freedom under Slot’s system
Gravenberch has credited Slot for giving him the freedom to push forward, something he rarely enjoyed last season.
Speaking to TNT Sports (via Liverpool FC) after the derby, he explained:
“It’s the coach that gives me the confidence. This season we have more freedom in the midfield. Last season I was only on the six, like deep, deep.
“Now I can go more forward, which you saw today. My strength is also there. I’m happy with that and also happy with the goal.”
That freedom was on full display at Anfield.
His perfectly timed run and finish from Mohamed Salah’s clever pass gave Liverpool the breakthrough, before he set up Hugo Ekitike for the decisive second.
For a player who failed to score a single goal last campaign, Gravenberch’s ability to arrive higher up the pitch has already changed Liverpool’s attacking rhythm.
The Dutchman also praised Slot’s clarity and tactical approach, noting how direct instructions have helped him and his teammates adapt to a more fluid style.
This flexibility has been key in Liverpool’s unbeaten start, which now includes back-to-back victories over Atletico Madrid and Everton in the space of a week.
Gravenberch’s numbers reflect that growth. He has already produced key goals and assist in just five Premier League games, underlining his evolution into a more decisive player.
If his current trajectory continues, he could become one of the central figures in Liverpool’s title defence.
