Rio Ngumoha’s rise through Liverpool’s ranks has been nothing short of remarkable.
Still only 16, the young winger is already carving out space for himself among senior players and he’s doing so with confidence far beyond his years.
Speaking from Hong Kong during Liverpool’s pre-season tour, Ngumoha reflected on his goal in the 5–0 friendly win over Stoke City with a grin (via Liverpool FC):
“It was my first goal and definitely many more to come!”
His smile, paired with the comment, revealed the mindset of a player who’s hungry for more.
“I was just happy to get the first one out of the way. Now let’s hopefully push on and work harder.”
He’s already made two senior appearances this summer and started the first pre-season game at Preston North End, where he played a key role in Conor Bradley’s opening goal.
For a player yet to turn 17, Ngumoha is moving fast.

Mohamed Salah’s everyday influence behind the scenes
When asked about adapting to life in the first team, Ngumoha pointed directly to the mentorship of senior players, especially Mohamed Salah.
The teenager didn’t just admire Salah growing up; he now learns from him daily.
“Salah was one of my role models growing up obviously, so it’s really big learning from him,” Ngumoha said.
“Everyone is really professional and you can see why they’re at the top. They’re always thinking about football, recovery, little things like eating right. So I definitely can learn a lot from them.”
He also credited other senior players with helping younger teammates like himself and Trey Nyoni settle in, both on and off the pitch.
“They really help the young players. Training with the best team in the world, the players you get to train with, you learn from them and you really test yourself.”
Despite the rapid progress, Ngumoha remains grounded.
Liverpool believe his development is best served by continuing to train between the U21s and first team, and the youngster agrees.
“Patience is key. I don’t want to rush anything,” he said.
“Just keep working hard, pushing hard and showing the manager what I can really do.”
For now, Ngumoha’s goal is simple, keep smiling and enjoy every moment on the pitch.
“When I play football it makes me happy.”
