Darwin Nunez Transfer Update

Newcastle United have turned their attention to Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez after missing out on top target Hugo Ekitike, according to reports from Sport Bild.

The Magpies are actively seeking attacking reinforcements this summer, with manager Eddie Howe eager to add firepower alongside Alexander Isak.

The Tyneside club had been pursuing Eintracht Frankfurt striker Ekitike, tabling a £70 million bid for the 23-year-old Frenchman. However, Frankfurt rejected the offer, holding firm on their £85 million valuation.

Newcastle even held talks with the player’s representatives in Austria. But with Ekitike now edging closer to a move to Liverpool, the Magpies have pulled out of the race.

Newcastle’s stance on Alexander Isak remains unchanged — he is not for sale. That has stalled Liverpool’s primary transfer objective, forcing the Reds to pivot toward Ekitike as a potential solution.

Ekitike, who registered an impressive 22 goals and 12 assists in 48 appearances last season, has emerged as a leading target for Liverpool as they prepare for life under Arne Slot.

What awaits Darwin Nunez now?

For Liverpool, any incoming striker is likely to be contingent on the departure of Darwin Nunez. The 26-year-old Uruguayan endured a disappointing campaign.

He netted just seven times in the Premier League despite the club’s title-winning run. He struggled for consistency and playing time under Slot, prompting interest from across Europe.

While Napoli have cooled their pursuit, AC Milan and Al-Hilal remain interested in Nunez, whose sale could free up funds and a roster spot for Ekitike.

Liverpool are reportedly willing to open negotiations with Frankfurt, encouraged by the Bundesliga club’s openness to engage if Nunez is sold.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have added both Victor Osimhen and Nunez to their shortlist. As the transfer window heats up, all eyes are on whether Liverpool can pull off a reshuffle in their attack — and if Newcastle can capitalise on Nunez’s uncertain future.

The battle for Ekitike may be nearing its conclusion, but it could spark a domino effect across the Premier League and Europe.
