Anthony Gordon is set to miss Newcastle’s Carabao Cup final against Liverpool after receiving a red card in their 2-1 FA Cup loss to Brighton on Sunday, as per DailyMail.

The forward was sent off for throwing his hands in the face of Jan Paul Van Hecke following a challenge in which the defender outmuscled him.

This suspension comes as a major blow to the Magpies, with Gordon now facing a three-match ban, which includes the crucial Carabao Cup final at Wembley on March 16.

Despite Gordon’s red card, the Magpies were only down to 10 men for a brief period. Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey was also shown a second yellow card for a late tackle on Jacob Murphy, resulting in both teams being reduced to 10 players.

The match proceeded into extra time, with the score tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Newcastle had taken the lead in the 22nd minute through Alexander Isak, who capitalized on a late foul from Yankuba Minteh on Tino Livramento.

However, Minteh redeemed himself just before halftime, scoring the equaliser against his former club.

In the final moments of regular time, Newcastle thought they had won it when Fabian Schar netted a fine finish, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside by semi-automated offside technology, which made its debut in English football this weekend.

What Anthony Gordon red card means for Liverpool

The defeat is a tough one for Newcastle, especially given their brief period of being down a player.

However, they still have the chance for silverware this season, with the first major trophy of the year up for grabs in two weeks.

Manager Eddie Howe will have to contend with Gordon’s absence and also worry about Isak’s fitness, who limped off just after Gordon’s red card.

In Gordon’s absence, Harvey Barnes is the most likely candidate to take his place on the left flank, where he will likely face off against Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Barnes has scored five goals in 28 appearances so far this season, but his opportunities have been limited, with the winger not starting any of Newcastle’s last 12 Premier League games.

He’s come off the bench seven times, been unused in one match, and missed four through injury.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are also dealing with injury concerns ahead of the final. Joe Gomez (hamstring) and Tyler Morton (shoulder) will be unavailable, while Conor Bradley (hamstring) remains a doubt.

The Carabao Cup final will be played at Wembley on March 16, with Newcastle hoping to secure their first major trophy since winning the FA Cup in 1955.
