Mohamed Salah kicked off the Premier League season in style, casually leaving some of England’s biggest football legends in the rear view mirror.

Liverpool’s Egyptian king entered the opener against Ipswich Town knowing he was tied with Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney, and Frank Lampard for the most goals on the first day of the season.

A pretty elite club, right? Well, Salah decided it was time to break out of the pack and claim the spotlight all for himself.

In the 65th minute, Salah did what Salah does best. With Dominik Szoboszlai forcing the ball into the box, the No. 11 was right there to slot it home, putting Liverpool up 2-0 and officially taking the opening-day goalscoring record for himself.

Move over, Shearer, Rooney, and Lampard – there is a new sheriff in town. But before Salah decided to rewrite history, it was Diogo Jota who put Liverpool on the scoreboard.

Record-breaker, team-player: Salah is all in one

Jota’s goal, coming just five minutes before Salah’s record breaker, was a thing of beauty. It started with Trent Alexander-Arnold, who played a sublime pass to Salah, and instead of hogging the glory, Salah slid it across for Jota to finish.

Team player and record-breaker? Salah’s got it all.

This 2-0 victory marked the perfect start to Arne Slot’s reign as Liverpool’s new head coach. It’s clear that much like Jurgen Klopp before him, Slot knows exactly where to place his trust: in the outstanding Mohamed Salah. And honestly, who wouldn’t?

Salah’s been doing this for years, and the numbers speak for themselves. His first opening-day goal for Liverpool came against Watford, and he followed it up the next year with another against West Ham.

2019? No problem, another goal, this time against Norwich City. The cherry on top came in 2020 when Salah absolutely demolished Leeds United with a hat-trick on opening day.

In 2021, Norwich got another taste of Salah’s magic, and 2022 saw Fulham added to his list of victims. Last season was the only blip, but don’t worry – Salah corrected that this year.

With yet another record under his belt, Salah continues to cement his status as one of Liverpool’s greatest ever goal scorers and, at this point, one of the best ever grace the Premier League. Shearer, Rooney, Lampard – catch up if you can.
