Nico Schlotterbeck Transfer Update

Liverpool’s January plans might just get a little more interesting. Reports from Germany suggest that Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck, a name on Liverpool’s radar, is growing unhappy with life under Niko Kovac.

The German international, who has been a key part of Dortmund’s defense since 2022, is reportedly frustrated with the team’s playing style and direction.

With contract talks now stalled, the 25-year-old could be open to a move next year — and that’s music to Liverpool’s ears.

Trouble brewing in Dortmund

Schlotterbeck’s frustrations have been simmering for weeks. Dortmund’s recent run of disappointing results — including the 4-1 defeat to Manchester City and a draw against Hamburg — seems to have only added to his dissatisfaction.

After the Hamburg clash, the defender admitted the team needs to “play more football,” a thinly veiled criticism of Kovac’s defensive and passive setup.

Reports from BILD claim he has already rejected a new deal extending his stay beyond 2027, raising serious doubts about his long-term future at Signal Iduna Park.

Apparently, Schlotterbeck isn’t thrilled about Dortmund’s lack of silverware ambitions either. The club’s inability to mount a consistent title challenge, both in the Bundesliga and Europe, has left him considering his options.

Could the door open for Liverpool?

Now here’s where it gets interesting for Reds fans. Liverpool have been keeping a close eye on Schlotterbeck for months.

With Ibrahima Konate’s future uncertain and Gabriele Leoni sidelined through injury, the Dortmund defender could be the perfect addition to Arne Slot’s evolving backline.

It’s no secret that the Anfield hierarchy admires his leadership and composure on the ball — qualities that would fit seamlessly into Liverpool’s high-tempo style.

Add to that his knack for starting attacks from deep, and it’s easy to see why he’s become a serious transfer target.

However, Liverpool aren’t alone in this race. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are also monitoring the situation closely. Bayern legend Lothar Matthäus even weighed in, saying:

“If things don’t work out with Upamecano, then Schlotterbeck would definitely be more than an alternative. Bringing him to Munich would almost be a must.”

Despite the tension, Dortmund officials remain hopeful of convincing Schlotterbeck to stay. Club CEO Lars Ricken said:

“We will not rush into anything. But of course, we don’t want to drag it out indefinitely, everyone is aware of that.”

The next big move?

For now, Schlotterbeck insists he’s focused on Dortmund’s season. But as contract talks drag on and his unhappiness grows, the summer could bring big changes. And if Liverpool make their move, they might just find the defensive upgrade they’ve been looking for.
