Chelsea are reportedly eyeing an audacious transfer for Liverpool star Joe Gomez who is valued £45m.

Ever since Roman Abramovich sold Chelsea as a result of sanctions on Russian businessmen due to the war-conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the club has been going in a downward spiral.

From being crowned the Champions League winners of the 2020-21 season, they did not even qualify in the Champions League after finishing 12th in the PL table in the 2022-23 season.

In the 2023-24 season, the Blues finished sixth in league standings under the management of Mauricio Pochettino and qualified for UEFA Conference League this season.

However, despite pulling the Stamford Bridge side out of the below average state, the Argentine manager has been sacked and replaced with Enzo Maresca.

But the bloated squad situation at the west London club is very serious at the moment with reports emerging that several senior players could leave the club.

The situation has gotten to a point that when asked about this issue, Pep Guardiola’s former assistant said,

“At the moment if I start to think I have 43 players it is not a good thing, I have 28 training with me… [Co-sporting directors] Paul [Winstanley] and Laurence [Stewart] are in charge of finding solutions for these guys, not me.”

Chelsea want to sign Joe Gomez

Todd Boehly’s ownership era has seen several players join the club on ludicrously long term contracts.

Since his takeover back in May 2022, the London club has spent over €1.3bn on player transfers. The club has maneuvered through FFP rules by amortization of players’ contracts.

Even though their squad depth has been concerning for the management, according to reports, Chelsea are in contact with the agent of Liverpool’s Gomez.

The 27-year-old who can play equally well both as a central defender and a right-back, can be on his way to join the Blues as he is under the same agency as Maresca – Wasserman.

Aston Villa are also in the mix to potentially signing the LFC defender.

In the first match for the Reds of this PL season, the England international saw the match out from the bench.

He was also included in the player-plus-cash swap deal for Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon which eventually did not actualise.

Gomez’s contract runs out in 2027 and whether the player or the club chooses to break it is a thing that will unfold in the coming days.
