Manchester United are reportedly gearing up for their favorite off-pitch pastime: hijacking Liverpool transfers. This time, the target is Giorgi Mamardashvili, the Valencia goalkeeper who was seemingly on the brink of a move to Anfield.
But in typical fashion, United are ready to swoop in and snatch him away, just to keep the rivalry interesting. Liverpool, who are apparently content with being the only top club in Europe without a summer signing, finally appeared to have made a move by agreeing personal terms with Mamardashvili.
The plan? Sign the 23-year-old now, let him groom at Bournemouth for a season, and then have him ready to challenge Alisson Becker in 2025. It all seemed perfectly laid out – until United decided they might fancy the Georgian for themselves.
According to reports, United have had their eye on Mamardashvili for a while, and now, just as Liverpool are about to seal the deal, sources claim the 6ft 6in keeper is “open to move to Old Trafford.”
Because why wouldn’t he be? Who could resist the allure of potentially playing second fiddle to Andre Onana?
Is it even possible for United to sign Mamardashvili?
Of course, United’s shopping spree this summer has already seen them splash out on four big names: Mazraoui, De Ligt, Yoro, and Zirkzee. But apparently the bank is not quite closed yet.
Erik ten Hag, never one to shy away from spending big, still wants to add Manuel Ugarte and a new left-back to his collection. However, there’s a catch: they need to make room in the budget for Mamardashvili.
Enter Jadon Sancho, the winger who is apparently the sacrificial lamb in the transfer drama. Despite mending fences with Ten Hag, Sancho is probably on the chopping block.
With Rashford, Garnacho, Anthony and Amad Diallo already jostling for spots on the wings, Sancho has become surplus to requirements. Chelsea and PSG are lurking in the wings, possibly eyeing a cut-price deal for the once-coveted winger.
So, will United actually manage to steal Mamardashvili from under Liverpool’s nose, or is this just another transfer window drama? Either way, the competition is not only on the pitch, but also in the boardroom.
