Liverpool have reportedly stepped up to hold initial talks with Real Madrid for Rodrygo.
The Brazilian was a key part of Los Blancos’ Champions League triumphs in 2022 and 2024. However, after the arrival of French superstar Kylian Mbappe, Rodrygo was repeatedly pushed to the sidelines last season.
Following Xabi Alonso’s appointment as Real Madrid coach back in May, Rodrygo might have expected a more consistent role under the new manager. But in the FIFA Club World Cup, Alonso also left him out—Rodrygo didn’t feature in five consecutive matches, including their 4-0 semi-final loss to PSG.
However, reports suggest Rodrygo still wants time before deciding on his future. Arsenal have been interested in him since last month, and sources say the Brazilian is also eyeing a move to the Premier League.
Last week, many sources reported Liverpool also wants him at Anfield. According to Alex Crook, preliminary talks between Liverpool and Real Madrid took place on Thursday regarding the Brazilian.

Why does Liverpool want Rodrygo?
Liverpool might be eyeing the 24-year-old forward as a potential replacement for Luis Diaz. With Diaz’s future still uncertain, Slot may want to prepare in advance to fill his spot this summer.
Although the PL Champions rejected both offers from Bayern and Barcelona for Luis Diaz, the club still wants to keep him for the upcoming season. The Colombian has reportedly expressed his desire to leave if a good offer arrives.
Diaz currently earns around £140,000 per week at Liverpool. He might be unhappy with the club’s slow approach to extending his contract, especially after a strong 2024/25 campaign where he played a key role in Liverpool’s Premier League title win.
Another possible reason for targeting Rodrygo is Anthony Gordon’s valuation. Earlier reports suggest Liverpool were also interested in the Newcastle winger, but his asking price is close to £100 million.
