Liverpool fullback Andy Robertson opened up on Hugo Ekitike’s red card.
Andy Robertson started on the left side in the game against Southampton on Wednesday. The Reds won the match 2-1, but it was another thriller as the winner came in the 85th minute. Arne Slot surprised everyone by starting a frontline of Alexander Isak, Federico Chiesa, and Rio Ngumoha.
In the backline, Giovanni Leoni also started against Southampton. The Anfield crowd witnessed Alexander Isak’s first Liverpool goal as the Swedish striker scored in the 43rd minute to give the Reds the lead.
However, Southampton equalised in the 76th minute, making the game tough. Then French forward Hugo Ekitike scored the 85th-minute winner to snatch victory for the Merseysiders.
But Ekitike was already on a yellow card after coming on in the second half, replacing Isak. His excitement got the better of him when he took his shirt off to celebrate the winner, earning a second yellow and a red card.
Arne Slot looked furious in the final moments of the game. After the match, he said: “I told him that if you score in a Champions League final in the 87th minute after beating three players and hitting it in the top corner, I can maybe understand you say: ‘It’s all about me.’”

Andy Robertson’s blunt take on Liverpool teammate Ekitike’s red card
Andy Robertson was clear in his reaction: “I’ll be very surprised if he does it again. Scoring a goal is emotional and he’s obviously forgot. His first one is stupidity.”
The Scottish left-back added: “It’s silly from his part. He will learn from it and I’m sure he won’t do it again.”
Meanwhile, Hugo Ekitike posted on Instagram: “I was so excited tonight to help the team achieve another victory here in our home for my first Carabao Cup match… The emotion got the better of me tonight. My apologies to all the Red family. Thanks to the fans who always support us and to my teammates for securing this victory!”
