The transfer saga of Liverpool is heating up at last as Arne Slot has set his sights on a new defensive target, Piero Hincapie. The Bayer Leverkusen defender has caught the eye of several European heavyweights. But Liverpool are much eager to steal him away, especially from under the noses of Atletico Madrid.
Despite being the only Premier League club yet to make a summer signing, Liverpool are apparently working behind the scenes. They were previously linked with Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi as their ideal No.6. But he turned down the Anfield move for his own reasons.
Not deterred, Liverpool are now plotting a January swoop for an ‘A-list’ alternative, with Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili also on their radar as a long-term successor to Alisson Becker.
Liverpool trying to sign Hincapie
The defensive situation, however, seems to be the immediate priority. With Joel Matip’s contract expiring at the end of last season, Liverpool’s backline needs reinforcement.
A report from The Athletic on Monday morning claimed ‘internal discussions’ are underway over signing a new defender. The report revealed:
‘Internal discussions have been had over defensive options since Joel Matip left when his contract expired at the end of last season.
‘Recruiting an attacking wide player has also been a topic of debate.’
While names like Sporting Lisbon’s Goncalo Inacio have been floated, it’s Hincapie who’s emerged as the latest obsession. At just 22, Hincapie played a pivotal role for Bayer Leverkusen, helping them to a standout season under Xabi Alonso.
His versatility – being able to slot in as a left-back – makes him even more appealing to Slot’s plans. Liverpool’s ‘firm interest’ in him has reportedly ‘taken an exciting turn,’ as they look to fend off competition from Atletico Madrid and possibly Tottenham.
As we heard from Spain
The report from Spain explains.
‘Arne Slot’s side have identified Hincapie as one of their priorities to strengthen their defensive line. Still just 22, the Bayer Leverkusen player has caught the eye of the English giants, who want to get ahead of Atletico Madrid.
‘Liverpool are in a strong position to secure Hincapie’s services before the summer transfer window closes. However, they will not be the only ones trying to attract the promising defender.
‘Atlético Madrid have also entered the fray, ready to challenge the Reds for Hincapie’s signature.
‘Alonso has made clear his desire to keep Hincapie in his squad. He considers the defender an essential pillar of the team and is doing everything possible to prevent his departure. The situation is further complicated by the interest of other European clubs.
‘With the transfer window about to close, attention is now focused on whether Liverpool or Tottenham will be able to convince Hincapie to join their ranks. The defender’s decision will be crucial in defining the course of negotiations and the future of Bayer Leverkusen in the coming season.’
