In 2001 FourFourTwo named the top 100 young players of the world at that time and a number of Liverpool players were also named in the list. Djibril Cisse topped the FourFourTwo list who at that time was playing for Auxerre.
The list also had Johny Heitinga, Liverpool’s current assistant coach. Heitinga was playing for Ajax at that time, He was No. 17 on the list.
Djibril Cisse topped FourFourTwo’s young players list in 2001
Cisse was named No. 1 in FourFourTwo‘s top young players list in 2001, But unfortunately, he couldn’t live up to the hype. Liverpool signed Cisse from Auxerre in 2004 for a club-record fee of £14m.
He was signed during Gerrard Houllier’s time, but he failed to impress new manager Rafa Benitez. His career was largely ruined by injuries, but he’d still win the Champions League, FA Cup, and European Super Cup during his time the Reds.
Djibril Cisse was one of the players to score in the penalty shoot-out win against AC Milan in 2005. He also scored in the FA Cup final win against West Ham, but that was his last game for the Reds. He was sold to Marseille in 2006, initially on loan. he left on a permanent deal in 2007. Djibril Cisse did have short stints in the Premier League with Sunderland and Queens Park Rangers.
