Liverpool’s January transfer plans may not unfold the way many fans are hoping, as Bayern Munich have reportedly stepped up their interest in one of the Reds’ long-term targets, Marc Guehi.
According to several reports (via Plettenberg, the Crystal Palace defender has already held initial talks with Bayern, who are said to be looking at him as a possible signing in the near future.
This development could complicate things for Liverpool, who came close to signing the England international just a few months ago.
On deadline day, Liverpool reportedly agreed to a £35 million deal with Palace, only for the London club to pull out at the last minute. Guehi had already passed his medical and agreed personal terms, leaving both the player and Liverpool disappointed.
The 25-year-old remains on Liverpool’s radar, with the club viewing him as a key option for the future. However, his move to Anfield now looks less certain, especially with top clubs circling.

A twist in the transfer tale for Liverpool
Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg claims Bayern Munich’s sporting chief Max Eberl is a “big admirer” of Guehi. The German giants are reportedly exploring a move, either as early as January or potentially on a free transfer in 2026.
Plettenberg wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “FC Bayern are already looking concretely at Marc Guehi. Max Eberl is a big admirer, and initial talks with the player’s representatives have already taken place.”
The report adds that Liverpool, Barcelona, and Real Madrid are also in the race—setting up what could be a classic transfer tug-of-war.
Despite growing speculation, trusted journalist David Ornstein has cooled expectations of a Liverpool move in January. Speaking to The Athletic, he said:
“I’m not expecting Liverpool to go for a centre back in January as things stand. Of course, these things could change, but I don’t think it’s a plan.”
He added that even with injuries at the back, the Reds are not expected to make a defensive signing mid-season.
However, reports from the Anfield Home sources suggest Liverpool have been holding quiet internal discussions about strengthening their defense, with Guehi among several names being considered.
The club’s strategy could involve either a calculated low offer in January or a pre-contract agreement for a summer move — keeping Liverpool in the game without breaking the bank.
