Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk has been hailed as the Premier League’s greatest-ever defender by former Anfield hero Jamie Carragher after an incredible performance in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Manchester City.
The Dutchman dominated City’s star striker Erling Haaland, leading to praise from fans, pundits, and former players alike.
The victory, which puts Liverpool nine points clear at the top of the table, was their most convincing statement yet this season.
Van Dijk, however, remains focused on the road ahead, warning his teammates against complacency.

Van Dijk vs Haaland: A one-sided battle – What Jamie Carragher said?
Jamie Carragher, Liverpool legend turned pundit, was full of praise for Van Dijk after the match. On social media, Carragher claimed Van Dijk made Haaland, a player often described as unstoppable, look ordinary.
“The best striker vs the best CB should be a great battle, but it’s so easy for him,” Carragher wrote, dismissing debates over Van Dijk’s place in history.
The Liverpool legend further added writing, “He’s the best CB we’ve ever seen in the PL, I know the replies will scream Liverpool bias!!!!”
The stats from the match back up Carragher’s claims. Haaland, who is known for terrorising defenders, failed to win a single duel against Liverpool’s captain.
He managed just one shot on target and completed only seven passes. In contrast, Van Dijk’s numbers were outstanding: seven clearances, four duels won, and three interceptions.
Van Dijk himself kept his celebration short and simple, posting “BUCKLE UP!” on Instagram after the match.

What Virgil van Dijk said?
The win leaves Liverpool nine points clear of second-place Arsenal and 11 ahead of Manchester City. Under the guidance of Arne Slot, the Reds look unstoppable, much like in their title-winning 2019/20 season. However, Van Dijk isn’t letting the early success distract the team.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the 33-year-old emphasised the importance of focus. “There’s no point at this stage of the season to get ahead of ourselves,” he said. “There are so many twists and turns. We’ve been in title races before, and we know it’s never over until the end.”
While Van Dijk admitted Liverpool could have scored more against City, he praised his team’s defensive performance. “City are a fantastic team, but I think we were solid defensively and created great chances.”
