Liverpool have received a much-needed boost ahead of their Premier League clash against Manchester City this weekend — but there’s still a touch of uncertainty in the air for Arne Slot’s men.

The Reds travel to the Etihad in what is set to be another blockbuster encounter between English football’s two dominant forces.

Since 2016, Liverpool and City have shared all eight league titles between them — six for Pep Guardiola, two for Liverpool — and this latest battle could shape the title race once again.

Heading into Sunday, both teams are chasing Arsenal at the top of the table, and every point could prove vital. But while City have a few fitness concerns of their own, it’s Liverpool’s injury list that has kept fans on edge this week.

Slot confirms major update on Isak, Alisson and others

Liverpool boss Arne Slot confirmed that new signing Alexander Isak has finally returned to training after three weeks out with an adductor problem.

However, Slot admitted the Swedish striker may not be ready to start against City just yet.

“He will train for the first time today with the team again after being three weeks out,” Slot told reporters.

“Although our rehab team is doing an incredible job, you cannot compare rehab with football training or matches. Give him some time.”

That update will delight Liverpool fans who’ve missed Isak’s attacking presence since his injury against Eintracht Frankfurt.

However, there’s still some frustration as Alisson Becker and Jeremie Frimpong remain sidelined. The Brazilian goalkeeper continues to recover from a hamstring issue but is expected to return right after the international break.

“Alisson for sure should be ready for Nottingham Forest on November 22,” Slot confirmed.

Frimpong, meanwhile, is on a similar recovery path, though the manager admitted he may need extra time to regain full fitness.

One door opens, another stays closed

While Isak’s partial return adds depth to the Reds’ attack, injuries to Giovanni Leoni and others continue to limit Slot’s defensive options. Leoni remains out for the season after suffering a serious ACL injury in the Carabao Cup.

The 18-year-old had impressed in his debut before the unfortunate setback, and Slot expressed his sympathy:

“He tore his ACL and it means he will be out for a year. Being so young and playing so well in your first game… it’s very hard to take.”

With Liverpool aiming to maintain their title charge, Slot will be hoping his key players stay fit during the crucial winter period. After all, a clash at the Etihad isn’t just another fixture — it’s a statement opportunity.

And if the Reds can pull off a win despite their injury list, it’ll surely feel like three points earned twice.
