Liverpool owners FSG have withdrawn from discussions to buy Bordeaux citing significant stadium costs and the challenging economic context of French football as key factors in their decision.
Liverpool Owner FSG Have Decided To Pull Out From Bordeaux Deal
Liverpool’s owner, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), have decided to withdraw from discussions to buy French club Bordeaux.
The talks, which were in their early stages, came to an end after FSG’s decision not to proceed following extensive and constructive discussions with all stakeholders involved.
Bordeaux announced that FSG informed them of their intention to step back from the potential deal due to significant future costs associated with the stadium and the broader economic context of French football.
This decision adds to the growing uncertainty surrounding the future of the Ligue 2 club, which is already grappling with financial and administrative challenges.
Financial Plan
Bordeaux are now putting all their energy into finalizing a financing plan for the 2024-2025 season in preparation for an appeal hearing.
The club is dealing with the fallout from a recent decision by the Direction Nationale du Controle de Gestion (DNCG), the body responsible for overseeing the finances of French football clubs, which demoted them from the French second tier to the third.
Bordeaux have appealed this decision and is fighting to maintain its position in Ligue 2.
The club’s financial troubles began in 2021 when their American owner, King Street, withdrew financial support, leading to administration and eventual purchase by Luxembourgish-Spanish businessman Gerard Lopez.
A Place Of Legends
Despite these challenges, Bordeaux remains one of the biggest clubs in France, boasting a rich history with six league titles and a memorable run to the Champions League quarter-finals in the 2009-10 season.
The club have produced football icons like Zinedine Zidane, Christophe Dugarry, and Jean Tigana, and has a strong fan base, regularly attracting 20,000 supporters to their Matmut Atlantique stadium.
However, the stadium, which is owned by Bordeaux’s city council through a public/private partnership, has been financially burdensome, losing money and requiring negotiations for a potential sale.
Bordeaux’s commitment to overcoming their current struggles reflects their storied past and the passionate support of their fans.
