The Dutchman had spent the previous campaign as part of Liverpool’s backroom staff, serving under Arne Slot before returning to Amsterdam in May.
That Anfield experience was expected to give him a boost in his managerial career, but supporters in the Netherlands are already questioning his suitability for the role.

Ajax have now been through seven coaches since Erik ten Hag left for Manchester United in 2022.
Heitinga himself is in a second stint, having been overlooked for the job after a productive interim spell in 2023, with Maurice Steijn instead appointed.
Steijn lasted just four months before the club turned back to Heitinga.Despite being third in the Eredivisie with three wins and two draws, Ajax’s position looks fragile.
