Liverpool’s Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid nearly faced a storm off the pitch before the action could even start on it.

Severe weather warnings across parts of the UK sparked concerns that the Anfield showdown might not go ahead as planned.

The Met Office had issued a yellow warning for strong winds and heavy rain earlier in the week. Reports suggested possible travel disruption, power outages, and dangerous coastal conditions.

With Liverpool set to host Atletico under the lights, fans feared that the elements might score the first goal of the night.

The warning was active from Sunday through Monday, prompting questions about whether the conditions could stretch into midweek.

The idea of a Champions League blockbuster being called off had some supporters already checking their calendars for potential rescheduling.

However, the latest update from the Met Office has eased those fears. By Wednesday evening, the worst of the storm is expected to have passed, with only light rainfall predicted in the morning.

Kickoff at Anfield should go ahead with temperatures around 16°C and calm wind speeds.

While the skies may clear, Atletico Madrid’s squad issues remain stormy. The Spanish side will travel without key striker Julian Alvarez, who injured his knee in last weekend’s win over Villarreal. Midfielder Johnny Cardoso is also sidelined with an ankle sprain.

According to Reuters, Diego Simeone’s list of absentees also includes Thiago Almada, Jose Maria Gimenez, and Alex Baena. That leaves Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata carrying the burden in attack at Anfield.

Liverpool, on the other hand, enters the clash with momentum. Four wins from four in the Premier League have given Arne Slot’s side confidence as they chase a seventh European crown.

The Kop will expect another big night — without any weather delays.
