Jurgen Klopp has opened up about his surprise over Liverpool’s massive £450 million spending spree this summer — something he says he never imagined during his nine years in charge at Anfield.

The former Reds boss admitted that he was “never, ever” told the club could spend like that, even when Liverpool were at the peak of their success under his leadership.

Speaking on The Diary of a CEO podcast, Jurgen Klopp reflected on his time at Liverpool and the club’s changing financial landscape. “I had no clue that this is possible,” he said.

“Nobody ever told me that it’s possible that we can spend like that. My last year at Liverpool, we obviously had the Adidas deal, the new stadium, all these kind of things — they earn more money. But never, ever I could have asked for that amount of money.”

Jurgen Klopp expresses surprise at Liverpool’s new era

Liverpool’s record-breaking transfer window saw them land stars like Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, Jeremie Frimpong, and Hugo Ekitike.

The eye-watering figures raised eyebrows — and a few smiles — across the football world, especially from a manager who once said his team “cannot compete financially” with the likes of Manchester City.

For Klopp, the shock wasn’t frustration — it was fascination. He explained that during his time, the club prioritized long-term growth over lavish spending.

“I love the fact that we were as successful as we were and built new stands and a training ground,” he said. “The training ground and the stands are wonderful. They could build pretty much a new stadium without leaving the old one — that’s a fantastic story.”

No regrets, only pride

The German tactician, who delivered the Premier League and Champions League during his tenure, emphasized that he has no regrets about Liverpool’s more cautious spending during his time. Instead, he takes pride in how his squad was built on spirit, smart signings, and stability rather than financial fireworks.

And while Klopp was stunned by the club’s new spending power, he also defended the current team’s expensive recruits. “Isak is an incredible striker. Florian Wirtz is an incredible talent. Ekitike is an incredible player. It’s a really good squad,” he said confidently.

Klopp’s words remind fans that while money talks, legacy whispers louder. And few have left an echo at Anfield as lasting as his.
