Liverpool legend, Michael Owen regretted his decision to join Manchester United which ended his chances of staying a hero to the fans who once admired him.
Michael Owen, who was once loved by the Liverpool football fans, is still paying for his horrible decision to join Manchester United.
Now of the age of 44, the former England striker was one of the most famous academy graduates for Liverpool, recording 158 goals from 297 appearances during his eight years there. His transfer to Real Madrid in 2004 shocked fans, but his later move to Manchester United caused lasting damage to his relationship with Liverpool supporters.
Owen joined Manchester United in 2009 after a three-year stint at Newcastle. When Owen confirmed the move to Liverpool’s rivals, it garnered outrage among the fans who had once idolized him.
Owen reflects on his return back to Anfield for the first time as a Manchester United player, where he expressed heartbreak as the Liverpool supporters booed him.

In an interview with “Off The Ball” in 2018, Owen described this experience as “Like a dagger in my heart.” Given the love and loyalty Owen had for Liverpool football club as a former player, he felt horrible hearing the Liverpool fans boo him.
Owen has continued to bear the burden of his switch to United long after his career came to an end. In 2020, during an interview with Jamie Carragher’s podcast “Greatest Game,” he discussed the emotional burden of returning to Anfield.
In that episode, Owen said, “It has been painful going back to Anfield. Crying in the players’ lounge and hoping nobody sees. It has been torture for a long time,”
He even went as far as to say that his decision to leave for Real Madrid in 2004 caused chaos that led to the ramifications of being an outsider to Liverpool football club.
The decision of Michael Owen to play with Manchester United will leave a lasting mark as he works to process the pain of being scorned for being a player he was once proud to call his own.
