Liverpool fans were thrown into a frenzy this week after fresh reports linked Kevin De Bruyne with a surprise move to Anfield.
With the Manchester City playmaker set to leave the Etihad at the end of the season, whispers of a Merseyside switch lit up social media faster than a Trent cross.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Respected journalist Ian Doyle (via Liverpool Echo) has poured cold water on those rumors.
According to Doyle, “Liverpool have not made an offer to sign Kevin De Bruyne this summer.” That’s right — no contract, no talks, no dramatic unveiling at the Kop. Not yet, at least.
De Bruyne, who turns 34 in June, will become a free agent after a glittering 10-year run with City. With his departure confirmed, several clubs — including Aston Villa, Napoli, and teams in the US and Saudi Arabia — have shown interest in the Belgian maestro.
Yet Liverpool, despite De Bruyne’s boyhood support of the Reds, are reportedly looking elsewhere to strengthen their squad.
And yes, De Bruyne has openly said in the past: “My favorite club is Liverpool and my favorite player is Michael Owen.”
He even doubled down years later, saying he grew up a Liverpool fan thanks to his family in England. But for now, that’s more nostalgia than negotiation.

Should Liverpool sign Kevin De Bruyne this summer?
On paper, it sounds dreamy. A world-class midfielder joining the club he adored as a child? Football storybooks love that stuff. But real-life transfers don’t always follow fairy tales.
Liverpool already have key players entering their thirties, including Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.
Adding another veteran — even one of De Bruyne’s quality — might not align with the club’s long-term vision.
The Reds are reportedly focusing on signing younger players, with a left-back and striker top of the summer shopping list.
Still, stranger things have happened in football. And with De Bruyne’s future wide open, never say never.
If there’s a late twist, Liverpool fans won’t mind dusting off their Owen shirts one bit.
