How Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate has been unlucky in past seasons

Ibrahima Konate has been quite unlucky in the past few seasons of his professional career, mostly in terms of winning trophies and silverware.

The France international defender has been a mainstay in Liverpool’s defence since he joined the Reds in 2021, and has been part of a team that has achieved success, including winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in his debut season under former manager Jurgen Klopp.

However, despite contributing largely to LFC’s defensive solidity, the 25-year-old has been on the losing end in several high-stakes finals both at club and international level.

Ibrahima Konate heartbreak in recent years

Konate played in the UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid in 2022, with Liverpool falling short through a 1-0 defeat in the match.

The defender was impeccable and highly impressive on the night, but the Reds could not lay claim to the title, courtesy of a Vinicius goal in the first half.

A towering presence in the France defence at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the defender was on the losing side again.

The French national team, making a second consecutive appearance in the final of the biggest football tournament in the world, lost to Lionel Messi’s Argentina in an enthralling penalty shootout following a 3-3 draw in the 90 minutes and extra time afterwards.

Another heartbreaking moment for the defender occurred in 2022 when Liverpool were pipped to the Premier League title with just a single point by Manchester City.

The Citizens ended the campaign on 93 points, while Konate and his Liverpool team finished with a total tally of 92. AnythingLFC on X, made a tweet,

“Ibrahima Konate lost the Premier League by one point, the Champions League in his hometown and the World Cup final all within 7 months. I can’t wait to see the man lift the Premier League trophy.”

Although Konate’s individual performances have been impressive in Liverpool and Les Blues colours, he has unfortunately just been a little short of glory in both club and international football.

Despite these near misses, Konate remains an integral part of the defensive structure at Anfield, and his time will surely come to claim silverware.
