Federico Chiesa has finally spoken through his actions after being left out of Liverpool’s Champions League squad by Arne Slot.
The Italian winger, who made a bright start to the season with a late winner against Bournemouth, has had to swallow the disappointment of missing out on Europe’s biggest stage.
The 27-year-old was overlooked in favour of teenager Rio Ngumoha, a decision that raised eyebrows among fans and pundits.
Chiesa, who has 16 Champions League appearances in his career, was said to be upset but has chosen to respond in training and on the pitch rather than through arguments.

A snub that sparked whispers
Slot admitted the choice was tough, revealing: “Of course, that is one of the most difficult things you have to do as a manager. For a player not to play is one thing, but not to be in the squad is always more difficult. I just explained to him why we made this choice. Of course, he wasn’t happy with that.”
The Dutch coach added that Chiesa “understood the arguments” even if he did not agree with them. Reports suggest Chiesa also turned down late summer transfer options, signalling his desire to fight for his place at Anfield.

Training tells the real story
Despite the disappointment, Chiesa has been praised for his reaction.
Slot pointed to his work rate, saying: “He wasn’t selected but he worked really hard these days to be ready for the upcoming matches. That is even more important than what a player tells you.”
Liverpool fans noticed the same in the club’s training footage, where Chiesa was seen pushing through drills with intensity. Supporters online praised his commitment, with some even calling him the “perfect squad player.”
