Freddie Woodman has embraced life at Liverpool, describing his first few weeks with the Premier League champions as “brilliant.”

The 28-year-old goalkeeper joined the Reds earlier this summer and is already enjoying the intensity of training and the company of his world-class peers.

Woodman is currently part of the squad in Hong Kong for the pre-season tour, working under first-team goalkeeping coach Xavi Valero.

Training alongside Alisson Becker and Giorgi Mamardashvili, the former Preston North End man says the experience is pushing him to new levels.

“It’s been hard work, hard graft and we are pushing each other,” Woodman told Liverpool FC.

“Working with Ali, for myself I’m getting to work with one of the best in the world and I’m just trying to take bits from his game and put them into my game. It’s the same with Giorgi as well – they are world-class goalkeepers.”

Freddie Woodman explains how he’s fitting in at Anfield

With almost 300 senior appearances to his name, Woodman has embraced his position as one of the experienced voices in Liverpool’s goalkeeping group.

As young talents like Armin Pecsi and Kornel Misciur develop their craft, he feels it’s his turn to offer the kind of guidance he once received.

“When I was a young lad I had it with Tim Krul and Rob Elliot, they helped me massively when I was a young lad at Newcastle [United] and I guess this is my turn to share my experience and help them,” Woodman said.

Since completing his move from Preston, where he made 138 appearances, Woodman has quickly settled in.

A call from Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes sparked swift negotiations and the keeper signed with the Reds while on holiday with his family.

“Obviously [it was] unbelievable for me personally to sign for this club,” he said.

“The transition has been lovely, everyone at the club has made me feel welcome, the lads have been brilliant and it’s been nice to come away on tour and get to know everyone.”
