AC Milan’s coach Paulo Fonseca faced a cruciating defeat against Liverpool in their opening game in UCL, he accepts that Liverpool were too good for his team.

In their opening Champions League match Liverpool defeated AC Milan 3-1 by taking advantage of Milan’s shoddy defensive set-piece marking and quick counter-attacks.

Following an early goal from Christian Pulisic for Milan, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kostas Tsimikas assisted almost identical goals from set pieces from Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk for Liverpool.

Fonseca lauds Liverpool for their dominance

Following Liverpool’s set-piece goals Milan’s head coach Paulo Fonseca expressed disappointment in his team’s performance and acknowledged that mental errors caused them to lose their momentum.

He said to Sky Italia,

“I think Liverpool are more of a team than us and they showed it. We have to work to have continuity.

“After the second goal conceded, the team never played. So, it’s difficult.”

Milan was outplayed by Liverpool’s cohesion and tactical skill as Fonseca noted when the Reds were winning key segments of the game.

Despite not scoring Mohamed Salah remained a constant threat and caused Theo Hernandez of Milan problems all game.

He said,

Especially trying to tackle Salah, trying to limit his movements. Salah and other players are the most difficult players to (stop).

Fonseca’s inability to contain him demonstrated how much his nimble movements and constant pressure contributed to Liverpool’s attacking success.

Liverpool’s third goal which sealed the victory in the 67th minute was assisted by Cody Gakpo following an exciting counterattack.

Fonseca highlighted the weaknesses in Milan’s one-on-one defense and general inconsistency by acknowledging that Liverpool’s individual brilliance especially Salah’s was hard to contain.
