Florian Wirtz has already caught the eye in Liverpool red — now all eyes are on what number he’ll wear on his back.

After Luis Diaz’s big-money move to Bayern Munich, Liverpool’s iconic No. 7 shirt is up for grabs, and Wirtz appears to be the leading contender to take it.

Wirtz joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in a record-breaking deal worth up to £116 million.

The 22-year-old midfielder was a star in Germany last season, playing a key role in Leverkusen’s historic treble. And while he’s only just started his journey at Anfield, the buzz around his shirt number is already in full swing.

The No. 7 shirt at Liverpool is no ordinary number. It’s a symbol — worn by club legends like Kenny Dalglish and Luis Suarez. With Diaz gone, the jersey is now vacant.

Wirtz wore No. 10 at Leverkusen, but that’s currently taken by Alexis Mac Allister. So, unless there’s a number swap behind the scenes, Wirtz looks set to inherit the famous seven.

It’s a shirt with a big history. And big expectations. But Wirtz doesn’t seem fazed — he’s already showing signs he can carry that legacy.

Florian Wirtz for Liverpool so far in the pre-season

Wirtz made a strong start to life in red during Liverpool’s final preseason match in Asia.

The German midfielder scored a tidy equaliser against Yokohama F. Marinos, helping the Reds bounce back for a 3-1 win. His calm finish showed exactly why Arne Slot pushed so hard to sign him.

He played 64 minutes in the Tokyo heat, linking well with Mohamed Salah and even taking charge of set pieces.

There were some rusty touches — fair enough in a preseason friendly — but the quality was clear. His first touch, vision, and movement stood out, even on a bumpy pitch.

For his performance, Wirtz not only bagged the Man of the Match award but also earned a ¥1,000,000 cash bonus — not a bad day at the office for Liverpool’s new No. 10 (or maybe future No. 7).

With the Community Shield against Crystal Palace just around the corner, the shirt number saga will be settled soon. And if Wirtz does pull on the No. 7, Liverpool fans will be hoping he writes a chapter worthy of the legends before him.
