The football world has been left devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, with teammates past and present sharing emotional tributes.
Mohamed Salah shared:
“I am truly lost for words. Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me about going back to Liverpool after the break. Teammates come and go but not like this. It’s going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won’t be there when we go back. My thoughts are with his wife, his children, and of course his parents who suddenly lost their children. Those close to Diogo and his brother Andre need all the support they can get. They will never be forgotten.”
Alisson Becker shared:
“Usually, I post things that make sense, but today, nothing makes sense! Once again, an ocean separates me from saying goodbye to someone I love. But I know that I am well represented by my club mates. To you, my friend Rute, just know that you will never walk alone — we will be with you as soon as possible. In a moment like this, all we can do is bow down before the Sovereignty of God, and receive grace and help in this time. I’ll remember Diogo as a great friend, father and husband!”
Virgil van Dijk shared:
“Man, I can’t believe it, I don’t want to believe it. Absolutely devastated and in total disbelief. What a human being, what a player, but most importantly what an unbelievable family man.
You meant so much to all of us and you always will! For your family to lose two sons, a husband and a father is just unimaginable. So cruel and unfair. My heart is breaking for all of your beautiful family, for Rute and for your kids. I promise you that in these difficult times and beyond we will always be there for your family.
A champion forever, number 20 forever. It’s been a privilege to have stood by your side on the pitch, and to have been your friend off it. We will miss you beyond words and never forget you. Your legacy will live on, we will make sure of it! Rest in perfect peace Diogo & André.”
Endo Wataru shared:
“Jots, I still can’t believe it. I don’t want to believe it. What a great player, what a great person you were. You will be remembered forever. My thoughts are with your wife, kids and all family and friends. Love you Jots. Rest in peace Diogo and Andre. You will never walk alone. From day to day, Jota and I used to sit together at the dining table and talk about football, family, games, so many things. Not to mention his composure in front of goal and his skillful finishing on the pitch. Still can’t believe he’s gone, but the wonderful times I spent with him at Liverpool are priceless memories. I’m still having a hard time processing it, but I hope we can all give his family all the support we can. I mourn the loss of both of you and offer my condolences.”
Jarell Quansah shared:
“Jots, I can’t believe we have been hit with such tragic news so early in your life. Knowing you as a person was truly inspiring! Being able to share a pitch with such a legend was a massive honour. I’ll never forget our battles on the training pitch, always trying to help me day in day out. My prayers and thoughts are with your wife, children and anyone close. He wears the number 20 💔 Rest in peace Diogo and Andre ❤️”
Thiago Alcantara shared:
“I love you brother. You will be forever within us.”
Cody Gakpo shared:
“Difficult to put the right words together. Loved playing with you but most of all appreciated you as a person. Grateful for the moments we’ve had. Thank you for making everybody smile on and off the pitch. My deepest condolences to the family. Rest in Peace Diogo & André 🕊️🕊️”
Andy Robertson shared:
“The ones I’m thinking about most right now are the family. Their loss is too much to bear. I’m so sorry that they have lost two such precious souls — Diogo and Andre. For the team and the Club, we’ll try to cope with this together… however long that takes. For me, I want to talk about my mate. My buddy. The bloke I loved and will miss like crazy. I could talk about him as a player for hours, but none of that feels like it matters right now. It’s the man. The person. He was such a good guy. The best. So genuine. Just normal and real. Full of love for the people he cared about. Full of fun. He was the most British foreign player I’ve ever met. We used to joke he was really Irish… I’d try to claim him as Scottish, obviously. I even called him Diogo MacJota. We’d watch the darts together, enjoy the horse racing. Going to Cheltenham this season was a highlight — one of the best we had. The last time I saw him was the happiest day of his life — his wedding day. I want to remember his never-ceasing smile from that magical day. How much he was bursting with love for his wife and family. I can’t believe we’re saying goodbye. It’s too soon, and it hurts so much. But thank you for being in my life, mate — and for making it better. Love you, Diogo. ❤️”
Curtis Jones shared:
“It’s hard to find the exact words how this feels. An unbelievable player & a great person to everyone. Grateful we shared so many memories on and off the pitch brother. I send my thoughts and prayers to the whole family. Rest peacefully Diogo and André ❤️”
Kostas Tsimikas shared:
“Oh he wears the number 20 and his name is Diogo. We moved to the club the same period. We were the new boys in the city. We’ve shared and celebrated some of the best moments of our careers together. Before one of our last ones you said to me ‘You cross, I score’ and that’s what happened. We laughed and talked about lots. You were a special player, a special guy, a true legend Diogo. You’ll always be remembered and always be loved. My heart and my prayers are with Rute, your boys, your little girl, your family and everyone who loved and waited for you both to go home. You and your brother André will be missed forever. We love you Diogo. YNWA 🖤”
Ryan Gravenberch shared:
“I still can’t believe it, I’m devastated and in deep shock. I will forever cherish the time we spent together. You will be greatly missed, especially for the wonderful person you were. My thoughts are with the family, as they cope with the immense loss of you and your brother. Wishing them much strength. Rest in peace, Diogo & André. ❤️🕊️”
Federico Chiesa shared:
“Diogo, it’s hard to find the right words at a time like this. I still can’t believe what happened. Love you and miss you so much. My thoughts are with you and your brother Andre, rest in peace. To your family, to your wife and children, I send my most sincere and heartfelt condolences.”
Caoimhín Kelleher shared:
“Jots Can’t believe I’m writing this right now and I’m finding it hard to put into words I’m absolutely devastated by this news. All my thoughts and condolences are with Rute and their 3 beautiful kids and Diogo and Andre’s family. It was such a pleasure to get to know you over these years and to share some special memories on the pitch and even more so off it. You became one of my closest friends in football. We bonded over all things sports watching any football match we could find, often your brother Andre’s game on your iPad. I was surprised a lad from Portugal loved sports such as darts, snooker and horse racing so much and some of my best memories were having a laugh watching them with you. You were such a fun, genuine, normal, down-to-earth and loving family man and always very competitive — I’m gonna miss our pre-match programme quiz 😢 I feel so blessed and grateful to have seen you on your happiest day, your wedding day — to be able to share in that with you was special. I’ll never forget it. You were deeply loved by everyone at the club, the city and all over the world. It’s gonna hurt for a long time and I’m gonna miss you so much but I feel so lucky to have got to know you and have such a good friend. Love you Diogo ❤️”
Fabinho shared:
“No words for this terribly sad day. It’s still hard to believe this happened. I had the privilege of spending time with this incredible person that Diogo was. You will be missed, brother! May God comfort Rute’s heart, the entire family, and everyone who loved Diogo and André. May they rest in peace. R.I.P.”
Trent Alexander-Arnold shared:
“It’s so difficult to find the right words when your head and heart are struggling to accept that someone you care so much about has gone. Diogo, your family was your world. They were everything. For Rute, his children, and his parents, all of our hearts are broken. And for Andre as well. Brothers and best friends. When it’s less painful, I want to remember Diogo with a big smile. So many laughs and happy moments. He was such a great teammate and a true friend. Forever number 20. Rest in peace, Diogo.”
Alexis Mac Allister shared:
“I can’t believe it. I will always remember your smiles, your anger, your intelligence, your companionship and everything that made you a person. It hurts a lot, we will miss you. Rest in peace dear Diogo ❤️”
James Milner shared:
“Devastated for the loss of Diogo and Andre. Absolutely loved sharing a dressing room with him, having so many laughs together, constantly winding each other up with our stubborn nature and truly marvelling at the stuff he did on the football pitch✨. All my thoughts, love and support goes to his family, friends and the Liverpool family. ❤️ Rest In Peace Jots. Love ya mate. YNWA.”
Joe Gomez shared:
“I don’t feel I have the right words. Like everyone, I’m truly devastated and in shock. I just want to send all my love and prayers to the family of Diogo and Andre. I can’t imagine how difficult this time must be for them, and I hope we can all do what we can to support them.
I’ll always cherish my memories of you and the special person you were. Love you Jots ❤️”
Luis Diaz shared:
“I’m at a loss for words… It hurts in my soul. Not just for what he was on the court, but for the person he was off of it. There are gestures that one never forgets, and Diogo had one with me that will accompany me all my life. My hug goes out to Rute, his three children and his family. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre 🕊️”
Roberto Firmino shared:
“When words fail, there are only inexpressible groans. And for that reason I get on my knees, praying that the Holy Spirit comforts the heart of Rute, Dinis, Duarte, Mafalda, Seu Joaquim, Lady Isabel and all the family and friends. It was a privilege and an honor to have known and lived such special moments alongside you. Rest in Peace to my brother Jota, and Andre.”
Ibrahima Konate shared:
“Diogo… I still can’t believe it. I’m devastated. I have no words to express my feelings. Beyond the extraordinary footballer you were, there was an exceptional man, a friend, and brother! May you and André rest in peace. I am truly devastated by this news. This club, this family that we shared together, will never forget you! I think back to all the moments we shared and I still can’t believe it, they all seemed perfect… You can be sure of one thing: your family won’t walk alone. We’ll be there to help them through this devastating moment. I would like to address the world: today it’s Diogo and his brother. Yesterday it was someone else. Tomorrow it could be us. Let’s enjoy every moment that life offers us, with our families, friends, even strangers. Let’s try to live in peace and send each other love. We don’t know what tomorrow brings. I LOVE YOU, MY BROTHER.”
Dominik Szoboszlai shared:

Conor Bradley shared:
“Jots. Where do I start — what an incredible footballer but an even better person. I feel really lucky to have spent a few years with you. Was always nice coming into the changing room in the morning and seeing you smiling and laughing and consistently calling me a hanger. Always remember the first time you invited me to your room to play FIFA — I think everyone knows where this is going, we were playing and by half time I’m pretty sure I was 5–0 down — that was the last time I was ever falling into that trap. 🤦♂️ When I first moved up from the academy you were always there for me and always helped me settle in with the lads, which I’ll be forever grateful for. My thoughts are with your wife, children and family for losing both Diogo and Andre. I can’t imagine how tough this is for you all, as I know how tough this feels for me today. Love you Jots and I’m sure we will meet again ❤️ Our number 20 ❤️ Rest in Peace.”
Darwin Nunez shared:
“There are no words of comfort for so much pain. I will always remember you with your smile, as a good companion on and off the field. I send all my strength to his family, from where he is I’m sure he will always be with you, especially his wife and three children. May Diogo and Andre rest in peace. 💔”
Tyler Morton shared:
“Devastating, RIP brother you will always be missed and remembered❤️ Thank you for everything. Condolences to the family.”
