Liverpool’s preseason tour in Asia has kicked off with smiles, sweat, and a bit of speed debate. After landing in Hong Kong earlier this week, the Reds began their training ahead of matches against AC Milan and Yokohama F. Marinos.

But it wasn’t just about fitness drills — it was also about finding out who’s the fastest man in red.

Cody Gakpo, who spoke to LFC TV after the first session, had a clear answer. When asked about new signing Jeremie Frimpong, Gakpo didn’t hesitate to praise his Dutch teammate’s pace.

“[He will bring] a lot,” Gakpo said. “I think he has a lot of quality, but I think one of his biggest qualities is he is maybe already the fastest player on the team.”

That’s high praise considering Liverpool’s locker room is packed with speedsters.

But just as Gakpo was sharing his thoughts, in came Curtis Jones — uninvited and armed with banter.

Curtis Jones comments on Cody Gakpo

Interrupting the interview with a grin, Jones jokingly declared, “He’s an incredible player. Probably the fastest in the team, one of the strongest, got the best technique, yeah, yeah, yeah, Cody Gakpo.”

Gakpo couldn’t help but laugh and replied, “Oh my god! Thanks Curt, thanks Curt!”

Despite the friendly disagreement, it’s clear Frimpong has made an impression. The £29.5 million signing from Bayer Leverkusen has wasted no time showing what he can do. Gakpo believes his blend of speed, crossing, and defense will add real value.

Another familiar face, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, also joined the club as assistant coach. Gakpo welcomed the experience the Dutch legend brings, saying, “He can teach us a lot from what he experienced in his career, as a player and as a manager.”

The Reds are prepping for another big season, and with Frimpong flying down the flanks — the race to be Anfield’s fastest is officially on.
