Arne Slot offered a candid assessment after Liverpool’s 4-2 defeat to AC Milan in front of nearly 50,000 fans in Hong Kong.
While acknowledging positives, he pointed to tactical gaps and rotation demands (via Liverpool FC):
“We missed out on seven senior players and we wanted to give 20 players playing time.
“As a result of that, too many players didn’t play in their own position. We were a bit too open once in a while on the counter-attack.”
Slot dismissed concerns over depth at centre-back, noting that players like Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo can fill in if needed.
Joe Gomez’s injury is minor and while Jarell Quansah hasn’t been replaced, Slot believes the squad has the flexibility to cope.
On the matter of vice-captaincy, he hinted that the decision has been made internally, though he stopped short of naming anyone.
As for the transfer window, Slot said he was pleased with the current squad and incoming signings.
“We’ve tried to bring new energy in but also ‘weapons’.” he explained.
“If you do the same as we did last year we will probably not be able to win it again.”
He highlighted the importance of both new additions and keeping key players tied down with extended contracts.

Praise for Liverpool’s fanbase and reflections on Hong Kong
Slot was struck by the passionate support Liverpool received throughout their stay in Hong Kong.
“I don’t think many clubs train in stadiums where 25,000 people are watching a training session.” he said.
“This is what this club means all over the world and we are happy to be part of that.”
He credited the warm reception, excellent facilities, and intense training environment for helping the squad prepare despite the heat and humidity.
On a lighter note, Slot reacted to hearing fans chant his name during the match.
“Weird in general if they sing for you, especially if you are a manager.” he said.
“If you are a player you maybe get used to that a little bit more. Most managers, when they sing for them it has something to do with a few bad results.”
Slot wrapped up the presser by reaffirming his satisfaction with the team’s progress:
“Most players have stayed fit and we’ve had a lot of help and support from the people of Hong Kong.”
