Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher patience seems to be wearing thin as Arne Slot responds, and honestly, can you blame him?
The 25-year-old is stuck in second place behind Alisson Becker, and to make matters worse, the Reds went ahead and signed Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia during the summer. Which actually means, “You are still No. 2… until we find a spot for the new guy.”
It is no secret that Kelleher wants out. During the international break with the Republic of Ireland, he did not exactly keep quiet about his frustration.
Nottingham Forest tried to swoop in with a late bid, but Liverpool turned it down. Apparently, they were expecting at least £30 million for their backup keeper. A cool price tag for a player who’s had more time sitting on the bench than actually playing on the pitch.
What does Slot think about Kelleher comments?
Arne Slot, Liverpool’s head coach, is not exactly sweating over Kelleher’s comments. In fact, Slot admitted he’d be more concerned if the goalkeeper was fine with being a permanent backup.
Slot, speaking at his pre-Forest press conference, said:
“I would be really worried if a player came out and said he doesn’t care about playing first-team football. That would be a bigger worry for me.”
“It’s normal they want to play but it’s normal club that a club like this that wants to compete for trophies has more than 11 players who can play. As long as they can accept their situation – not in a way that I don’t care I’m not playing but by helping the team when they have to – is good place to be.”
“Caoimhin has shown many times in the past few years and in pre-season he’s ready when we need him. It’s a good thing and who knows, he’s going to play for us in the future but at the moment, it’s quite clear Alisson is No.1. It’s a normal situation for a player to be in if you’re not playing but he handles the situation.”
