Alexander Isak got what he wanted this summer — a blockbuster £130 million transfer to Liverpool. It was the move he had been pushing for, even if it meant going on strike at Newcastle United to make it happen.

But now, just weeks into life at Anfield, the Swedish forward is learning that forcing a transfer doesn’t always go as planned.

When he left Tyneside, Isak expected to step straight into Liverpool’s attack and start scoring. Instead, he’s struggling for sharpness, form, and confidence.

The Reds may have signed him as a ready-made star, but his preseason saga has left him playing catch-up — both physically and mentally.

The move that came at a cost for Alexander Isak

By refusing to train or play for Newcastle in July, Isak effectively paused his own development. Reports (via The Telegraph) suggest he did less than two weeks of proper training before isolating himself from the first team.

He trained alone until the end of August, doing only basic drills while waiting for the deal to go through.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has admitted that the striker is still trying to regain full fitness. “He’s effectively doing his preseason work in competitive matches,” the manager reportedly said.

That explains his sluggish start — just one goal in six games so far. For a player brought in to lead Liverpool’s title charge, it’s hardly ideal.

And while Isak is known for his cool composure in front of goal, right now he looks a shadow of the player who once lit up St James’ Park.

Even off the pitch, signs of strain are showing. When asked by Swedish media if he had spoken to Eddie Howe since leaving Newcastle, Isak’s simple answer — “No” — said more than enough.

His expression reportedly showed discomfort, suggesting there are still emotional scars from the messy exit.

When the dream move feels like hard work

Liverpool knew Isak’s fitness wasn’t at 100% when they signed him. They’re taking the long view, confident his class will shine through once he’s back to full strength.

But in the short term, the Reds need goals — and Isak’s slow start has drawn attention.

His situation is also affecting Sweden’s World Cup hopes. The 26-year-old has looked off the pace for his country, missing key chances in defeats to Kosovo and Switzerland.

Manager Jon Dahl Tomasson has defended him publicly, but Sweden’s struggles have only added pressure on their star striker.

There’s no doubting Isak’s talent. His touch, pace, and movement remain top class. Yet football fans know — form is everything, and fitness is gold. Forcing a move might have secured his dream club, but it also disrupted his rhythm at the worst possible time.

Liverpool supporters will hope this is just a temporary dip. But for now, Isak’s story serves as a reminder — sometimes the fastest way to the top can leave you short of breath when you get there.
