Liverpool kicked off their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 win over newly promoted Ipswich Town at Portman Road, giving Arne Slot a solid, if not spectacular, start to his tenure. Here is what we learned from the match – and about Slot’s Liverpool.
Ipswich won’t be pushovers
Don’t expect Ipswich to roll over like last season’s relegation fodder. While Burnley, Sheffield United, and Luton made quick returns to the Championship, Ipswich showed they are not planning to follow suit.
They gave Liverpool a real scare in the first half, with Alisson forced into action more than once. Although Liverpool eventually broke through, Ipswich proved they are not here to make up the numbers.
Jota’s fitness is key
Diogo Jota, fresh off leading the line, reminded everyone why his fitness is crucial. He netted the opener, and it is not a stretch to say Liverpool’s title hopes hinge on him staying fit.
Had Jota been available all last season, who knows – maybe Jurgen Klopp would have been a two-time Premier League champion by now.
Liverpool vs Ipswich : Second-half magic
Liverpool’s first-half display was a bit underwhelming, to say the least. But whatever Slot said during halftime worked like a charm.
The Reds came out after the break looking like a different team, turning the game around with a five-minute blitz that left Ipswich gasping for air. It is a good sign for Slot, even if the first half was one to forget.
Slot’s sideline fury
Slot’s blood pressure probably spiked up when Wes Burns somehow avoided a red card. Burns, already on a yellow, blatantly handled the ball.
But the referee and VAR turned a blind eye. Slot’s sideline outburst was understandable – he is clearly not one to let such things slide.
Despite the win, Liverpool’s transfer business, or lack thereof, remains a topic of debate. Joe Gomez’s absence from the squad indicates that his Anfield days might be numbered.
Meanwhile, Slot’s decision to sub in Ibrahima Konate at halftime raise eyebrows – do the Reds need more defensive reinforcements? Liverpool’s cautious approach in the transfer market is still up for discussion, especially after their flirtation with Martin Zubimendi ended in rejection.
