Manchester City star and Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold’s England national teammate Jack Grealish bet £500 over the free-kick in the 3-1 Nations League victory over Finland which the Merseyside vice-captain scored.
The Three Lions played the fourth game of the Nations League against Finland on Sunday at Helsinki Olympic Stadium after their recent 1-2 defeat against Greece last Friday. England bounced back in fashion as they thrashed the Finnish side 3-1 with the goals of Jack Grealish, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Declan Rice.
The former Aston Villa player opened the scoring for the English national team in the 18th minute with Angel Gomes’s assistance. Even though England were able to score early in the game, their second goal came much later.
In the 73rd minute, Jude Bellingham was fouled right outside the Finland box and the Three Lions were handed a free-kick. Alexander-Arnold stepped up to take the spot kick and delivered the ball at the back of the net immaculately. England led 2-0.
And for the last England goal, Declan Rice poked in a brilliant set-up assist from substitute Ollie Watkins in the 84th minute. Finland’s Arttu Hoskonen scored a consolation goal in the 87th minute.
Jack Grealish bet with Trent Alexander-Arnold over England free-kick
Before the Liverpool ace scored that amazing free-kick, Grealish was seen lingering around Trent. Speaking to ITV1, the City winger confessed,
“I said, as a joke, if you score this I’ll give you 500 quid – and he just slapped it in the top bin. I owe him.”
Although this little bet between the two England internationals monetarily benefitted Trent, this goes to show how well the Merseyside fullback adapts to pressure and faces challenges head-on.
Before his current contract with the Anfield giants ends next summer, this also is a reminder for the club of the Scouser’s capabilities and quality.
This was England’s third victory in four matches the interim manager Lee Carsley has been in charge. Grealish confidently added that they could’ve easily scored more goals.
“I think we could have had a few more, especially towards the end when the game opened up. It was difficult at times in the first half. At the end I think we are bit gutted as players to concede from a set-piece. We needed a win today so happy with that,” he concluded.
