Footballers’ global trade union FIFPRO recently published the list of nominees for the 2024 FIFPRO World 11 and Virgil van Dijk is the only Liverpool player nominated.

Every year, FIFPRO combines all-star teams consisting of best 11 players in men’s and women’s football across the globe to form the FIFPRO World 11. The players’ trade union do not nominate the players themselves.

Instead, FIFPRO let the professional players professional football clubs around the world vote for the players of their liking through unique links that give players access to a digital voting platform.

Footballers pick the three players who, in their opinion, were the most outstanding in each of the following positions: goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and forwards.

The goalkeeper, three defenders, three midfielders and three forwards with the most votes in their position make it into the World 11.

The 11th spot is assigned to the outfield player with the next highest number of votes. Players are free to choose any of their peers.

Each position is based on their performances during the period from 21 August 2023 to 14 July 2024 inclusive.

Players must have appeared in at least 30 official matches during that period to be eligible.

The 11 men and women with the most votes will be named in the World 11 squad which will be revealed on FIFPRO’s digital platforms on 9 December 2024.

The Reds’ skipper has been included in the shortlist of the 26 players alongside greats like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and others.

The Dutchman has been a World 11 winner thrice before in 2019, 2020 and 2022 and is one of the many defenders on the list along with Ruben Dias, William Saliba, Antonio Rudiger and others.

Speaking about the pride of being nominated, Van Dijk said,

“To be voted by your colleagues, your peers, is the highest recognition you can get. The guys that vote for you go through almost the same things you go through on a daily basis.”

The towering Netherlands international’s performances have been excellent this season as the Merseysiders remain the team with best defensive record in the PL and UCL.

Hopefully, he adds another feather in his cap with this year’s World 11 trophy.
