Liverpool are in talks to extend goalkeeper Adrian San Miguel’s contract beyond this season, according to reports from Football Insider.

The Journey of Adrian at Liverpool

Adrian joined the club in the 2019/20 season as a backup option and has since made 14 Premier League appearances. Despite his limited playing time, he contributed to Liverpool’s Premier League title victory in his first campaign. However, his appearances have dwindled this season, and he faced criticism for his performance against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

Will Adrian stay?

Initially expected to leave as a free agent this summer, Adrian’s situation has taken a significant twist. Liverpool have now initiated new contract negotiations with the 36-year-old, indicating their intention to keep him at the club.

The decision stems from concerns that their second-choice goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher, may seek more regular playing time elsewhere. Liverpool are identifying their options in the goalkeeping department, and Adrian is part of their plans if he signs a new contract.

Possible departures from Anfield

While Liverpool announced the departures of several key players, including Roberto Firmino, James Milner, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Adrian’s name was noticeably absent from the list.

This omission suggests that the Spaniard’s stay at Anfield could be extended. However, discussions are ongoing, and Liverpool is considering alternatives, including Ron-Robert Zieler from Hannover 96.

Klopp on the situation

Manager Jurgen Klopp has addressed the speculation surrounding the goalkeepers and expressed his belief that both Adrian and Kelleher will remain at the club.

Klopp dismissed the idea of Kelleher leaving and stated that an exceptional offer would be needed to consider a transfer. Regarding Adrian, Klopp indicated that if there are no farewell plans, it likely means the goalkeeper will stay.

When asked why there were no farewell plans for Adrian, Klopp stressed that both he and Kelleher would stay.

“Caoimh Kelleher? He has a contract! You want us to say goodbye just incase? I honestly can’t see Caoimh leaving.

It must be an extraordinary offer for me to start thinking [of selling him], I have to say.

Adrian, if we don’t say goodbye, what does that mean? That he probably stays. If there’s nothing in the papers then it’s not decided yet, finally.

But we will not [say goodbye] just incase. But I have a rather good feeling that we will keep working together in that position.”

While Liverpool have bid farewell to several players, Adrian’s future remains uncertain, but indications suggest that he may continue his tenure at Anfield. The club is also considering other goalkeeping alternatives, with Ron-Robert Zieler being mentioned as a potential target.
